Pharmacy Training

An individual who wants to have a successful career as a pharmacy technician will first have to get into a reputable school that offers an accredited pharmacy technician training program. While it is true that employment for pharmacy technicians is expected to improve in the next few years (25 percent increase through the year 2018), the sheer number of people getting into this career will definitely make life harder for you. Therefore you need to make yourself as competitive as possible so that you can be qualified for the best employment opportunities and the best salary ranges as well.

Many quality pharmacy technician training programs are offered in vocational schools and community colleges. A formal pharmacy tech program may last anywhere from 6 months tom 2 years depending on the level of expertise you want to have. Ideally, you want to take up a training program that will give you the highest level of expertise so that you can be more qualified for a wider range of employment opportunities. Some pharmacy techs may tell you that they have only taken up an on-the-job training in order to get where they are, but the situation is different now since more employers prefer hiring those with formal training and certification.

A typical pharmacy tech training program will be comprised of both lecture and laboratory hours. Your training program is designed to immerse you in the critical aspects of the pharmacy technician career, focusing on key subjects such as pharmaceutical techniques, pharmaceutical terminologies, pharmaceutical calculations, pharmacy law, and pharmacy ethics. And since you will be spending most of your time handling different medications, you will also be required to learn the different types of medicines, their generic names, what they’re for, and their recommended dosages. An internship is also included in your training program so as to give you a first-hand experience on the real thing.

Pharmacy tech training programs are also now offered online and these are beneficial for individuals who find it hard to attend a physical class because of their hectic schedule or work. Schools which offer online training programs allow students to enroll at any time of the year or give them more flexible enrollment dates. And since you will be studying online, tuition fees are often cheaper because you are not using any of the school facilities, plus you don’t have to spend on transportation costs and food. The only downside with online training program is that you don’t get to have an actual instructor help you in case you need help or have any questions.

If you want to make sure that you get into a quality pharmacy technician training program, always remember to check if they are accredited by a well-known organization, in this case it is the American Association of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). You can check the ASHP website for a comprehensive list of pharmacy tech schools and training programs that they have accredited. The ASHP website should also be able to provide you with detailed information about the available pharmacy tech training programs so that you can evaluate which one will suit your needs.
